Digital marketing guide for event organizers: how to boost ticket sales

How do you turn online interest into sold-out dates? We've got the tips!

The past few years have been challenging for event organizers, but despite Covid lockdowns, social distancing rules, and postponed dates, the online world has opened up many opportunities for artists, managers, and venue operators alike.

From live-streamed concerts to hybrid concerts, organizers and creators of music events have discovered new ways to entertain. In addition, the wealth of social media platforms and digital marketing tools has allowed organizers and performers to build closer relationships with attendees and fans than ever before.

In this digital marketing guide, we've gathered the information you need to promote your concert, festival, or club night, and how to turn online interest into sold-out dates. Let's get started!

Social media marketing

You can't ignore the fact that if we want to reach our audience, we need to be present on the platforms they use most. And it's no surprise that more people than ever are actively using social media.

Here you can generally reach people in two ways: organically, by posting your event details for free, and with paid ads, which let you target your audience based on specific demographics and other data points.

Organic

One convenient advantage of social media is that your posts are available to the public. Publish your event details on your Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok accounts, and your followers get all the essential information they need to buy tickets to your event.

Since they are your followers, they have probably already shown interest in your previously announced events and are very likely to buy tickets to future ones as well. What's more, it can further strengthen your event when potential attendees comment and share information among themselves. Simple, free social media posts can therefore be effective at generating ticket sales.

Paid

In addition to organic social media posts, paid ads can reach an even larger number of people. And with the tools available, you can optimize them to reach the right demographic target groups.

We do have to mention, however, that inflation has taken its toll in the digital space too. Advertisers are facing staggering ad inflation, so be prepared to spend many times the amounts you were used to on paid placements.

SEO

SEO, or search engine optimization, focuses on helping audiences find your event's website when they search the internet. It's all about fine-tuning your website so that it appears in the organic search results.

This is a free option that makes your website or event listing page easier to discover, which can ultimately increase ticket sales.

Paid search

Although social media has its own audience, the internet is about more than socializing. People constantly use Google and similar search engines to find all kinds of information. Marketing platforms such as Google Ads give you the chance to get your website or event page to the top of relevant results. It's not free, but the results usually speak for themselves.

Search ads are text ads that appear at the top of or alongside search results. They are triggered by the words or phrases a user types into the search engine. They are set up through Google Ads, and the cost isn't sky-high either. We definitely recommend giving them a try!

Email marketing

Emails give you the opportunity to communicate directly with previous ticket buyers and event attendees, and even with those who have already shared their contact details, which can be read as an expression of potential future interest. This makes your email list especially valuable, and it means email marketing can be effective both for generating sales and for growing your audience.

It's not easy to stand out in a crowd of emails, since we're competing with many other incoming messages. Somehow we still have to stand out, and we've previously explored in more detail which tactics can make the emails about your event more appealing. Check it out!

The challenges of recent years have undoubtedly caused organizers significant headaches. The good news, though, is that as people have largely shifted to digital activities, this has opened up new opportunities to spread your message electronically and reach new, larger audiences.
